چکیده

We report the first result from our survey of rapid variability in symbiotic binaries: the discovery of a persistent oscillation at P = 1682.6±0.6 s in the optical emission from the prototype symbiotic, Z Andromedae. The oscillation was detected on all 8 occasions on which the source was observed over a timespan of nearly a year, making it the first such persistent periodic pulse found in a symbiotic binary. The amplitude was typically 2 − 5 mmag, and it was correlated with the optical brightness during a relatively small outburst of the system. The most natural explanation is that the oscillation arises from the rotation of an accreting magnetic (BS ∼> 10 G) white dwarf. This discovery constrains the outburst mechanisms, since the oscillation emission region near the surface of the white dwarf was visible during the outburst. A “combination Nova” Outburst in Z Andromedae: Nuclear Shell Burning Triggered by a Disk Instability

We describe observational evidence for a new kind of interacting-binary-star outburst that involves both an accretion instability and an increase in thermonuclear shell burning on the surface of an accreting white dwarf. We refer to this new type of eruption as a combination nova. In late 2000, the prototypical symbiotic star Z Andromedae brightened by roughly two magnitudes in the optical. We ...

Resolving the Delta Andromedae Spectroscopic Binary with Direct Imaging

We present a direct image of the innermost companion to the red giant δ Andromedae using the Stellar Double Coronagraph at the Palomar Observatory. We use a Markovchain Monte Carlo based algorithm to simultaneously reduce the data and perform astrometry and photometry of the companion. We determine that the companion is most likely a main-sequence K-type star and is certainly not the previously...

High Magnetic Field Spectroscopy in Astrophysics

The discovery of very large magnetic fields in white dwarf stars and neutron stars has stimulated interest in the spectroscopy of free atoms in high magnetic fields. We review the discovery of continuum polarization in certain white dwarf stars. We discuss the interpretation of the spectra of the magnetic white dwarfs and the confirmation of the presence of large fields. We describe recent inve...

An X-ray Jet from a White Dwarf – Detection of the Collimated Outflow from Ch Cygni with Chandra

Most symbiotic stars consist of a white dwarf accreting material from the wind of a red giant. A growing number of these objects have been found to produce jets. Analysis of archival Chandra data of the symbiotic system CH Cygni reveals faint extended emission to the south, aligned with the optical and radio jets seen in earlier HST and VLA observations. CH Cygni thus contains only the second k...

A radio jet in the prototypical symbiotic star Z And ?

As part of a multi-wavelength campaign to observe the 2000–2002 outburst of the prototypical symbiotic star Z Andromedae, we observed this object six times each with the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) and Very Large Array (VLA). The radio flux varied significantly during the course of the optical outburst at all three observation frequencies (1.4, 5, and 15 GHz). A j...
